Almost two thousand years ago something so profound and awe inspiring occurred that it caused a
permanent change in the life of man. The message proclaimed by Jesus, Messiah and Son of God, echoed
throughout the known world causing thousands of people to drop whatever they were doing to follow
him. His message of a loving and compassionate God was new, refreshing and intriguing. In addition to
his lessons and parables, Jesus left us with the two greatest commandments - "You shall love the Lord,
your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind....You shall love your neighbor as
yourself."
Imagine what it must have been like living in Palestine at the time of Jesus. You lived side by side with
Jews, Romans and Greeks. It was a time of survival of the fittest, or survival of those who fit in. One could
be stoned to death from a mere accusation. If someone was somehow different, crippled, blind or
diseased, they were immediately deemed an outcast, perhaps possessed by a demon, and driven out from
the community. There was little love and compassion but plenty of greed, bigotry and hatred.
Is there much difference today? If one is divorced, a single parent, homosexual, a substance abuser,
handicap, or without means of adequate support, where do these people go to worship? Where can they
be accepted for who they are without question, without reproach for wanting to love God with all their
heart, with all their soul, with all their mind? Where can they go to be loved by their neighbor and fellow
man?
Anyone who is marginalized or rejected for who they are as creations of God, the Mother and Father of us
all, is welcomed here at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Mission. We will always administer the sacraments to
all who seeks the loving grace of God. We are a Church for the people of God as promised by our Savior
Jesus Christ.
